Oh man, this is a perfect example of why we love what we do and why you love us. We’ve been tuned into Pearl Charles since 2010 when DHR was writing about music for a local newspaper and became involved with putting a show together at The Comic Bug in Manhattan Beach, CA which was centered around The Blank Tapes and Dirdy Birdy but also included the unannounced (even to us) Driftwood Singers – a very old school American folk-oriented acoustic duet featuring Pearl… From there we watched her join forces with The Blank Tapes, maybe we partied together a tad here and there, then we were happy to include tunes from her psyched out poprock EP from 2015 in various DHR DJ sets for surf contests and brewery events; and now, well, on the same day as her album release party at The Echo in Los Angeles, we’ve got a new pearl to add to our necklace…
A new LP greets us in 2018 with a wholly unexpected new turn and sound from the Pearl Charles we thought we knew. The lovely lady has seen fit to keep us on our toes while skipping across town on the heels of what she’s decided to leave behind and take with her. Sitting, listening, and thinking, the brainstorm which comes to mind showers down thoughts of Blondie and The Eagles making a baby in Gram Parson’s Joshua Tree Inn quarters while Bee Gees massage the voyeuristic shoulders of Fleetwood Mac kneeling before the keyhole with a satisfied grin. Twangy country slide guitar settles in almost seamlessly next to pop and disco sensibility. Picturing a short white dress clad gal rollerskating across a humid, dusty dirt desert floor, grooving without looking back, too long.
