Fartbarf, Halloween Swim Team, and The Terrapin will be performing at Patrick Molloys (Hermosa Beach, CA) 9PM Tuesday, Sept 14 – FOR FREE! It’s part of the Dirty Hippie Radio Presents Tune In Tuesdays series being funneled through Pat Molloys to bring a kaleidoscope of impressive independent music to a languorous scene.
You’re not going to get a better fix for your cranial delight than this on a Tuesday night anywhere (me thinks). Keep an eye out here or plug into our DHR Facebook for upcoming Tune In Tuesdays at Patrick Molloys as well as other DHR Presents gigs.
Fartbarf
Fartbarf hails from the Hermosa area (Redondo Beach and San Pedro), surfacing as one of the most energetic and unique bands on the beat, sure to freak you out, dance you off, or drive you apeshit. Their trippy, heavy, funnily serious electro-dance-rock music casts a spellbinding effect which draws in all walks of musical appetite. Circuit bending, robotic voices, analog synthesizers, and drums – to say the least.
Halloween Swim Team
Halloween Swim Team has created a unique and unusual sound. They’ve been (self)described as “electronic space pop prog kraut suck”. Hmm, I’m in! They’re extremely interesting, quite good, and (like Fartbarf) catchy. Maybe like a Can meets Air, but let’s not go there as it would be impossible to compare them to predecessors while they’re entirely their own LA/Inland Empire based band.
The Terrapin
I often think of The Terrapin as a Fifty Foot Hose meets Smashing Pumpkins. Picture the fluidity that permeates the Pumpkins’ heaviness becoming psychedelic, add in striking female vocals, some trippy keys and effects and you got it. The Terrapin are an Echo Park and Long Beach based band.
The Myonics and the Cobalt Cranes will be performing this Sunday, Sept 5 at Echo Curio (Echo Park, CA). We’re totally looking forward to this show! It’s not only great to have The Myonics in town, but what a fantastic venue for the appearance. It’ll be like trying to fit a bicycle into a backpack, in terms of how miserably the Echo Curio will fail at containing the raucous sound that will surely be blasting from these excellent bands. Joining the lineup while on tour from Seattle is the Night Beats.
The Myonicsmost recent EP, “O Africa, Brave Africa!” will be followed up by the imminently forthcoming EP “Digits”. “Africa…” saw The Myonics shift their studio explorations into broader embrace: stirring together far reaching elements of psych, rock, punk, and even a slightly electronic sound – always maintaining that piercing attitude that so effectively transpires from Jasper’s simultaneously lackadaisical/striking vocals. We can only wait to hear what’s in store with “Digits”, and perhaps we’ll get a sneaky peak into some of the tracks this Sunday night.
“Digits” will be available Sept 28, with a scheduled Release Party at The Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco. Also performing at the event is The Like, having just returned from major European and Australian tours.
The Cobalt Cranes couldn’t have conceptualized a better album cover for their debut EP “In Media Rez” – it illustrates their music perfectly. I could picture myself behind the wheel of that car – surrounded by the flames of my own electric energy while maneuvering through the crazy scenes goin’ down around me on the buzzing roads of life, just cutting and burning through the bullshit. Good ass driving music too!
Well, as was prudently suspected, the speakeasy operation that stood fortuitously as The glorious Stronghold in Venice CA was shut down, axed, booted out. Apparently they’ve taken up residence at The Waterfront in Marina Del Rey and are still bringing the same high caliber American roots music. The Reflectacles(new EP The Wiley Post coming to DHR any day) will be performing Sep 9 with The White Buffalo, Lukas Nelson, and Promise of the Real. And tonight Aug 27, Escalator Hill opens for The Brothers Comatose and Whispering Pines.
I’m all about the opportunity to finally experience the Brothers Comatose doing their neo blue grass thing, and have recently become very excited about the country roots rockin’ Whispering Pines. Legend has it that the Brothers Comatose’s mandolin player’s cousin is in Whispering Pines. Tis a small world out here indeed. Maybe we’ll see some on stage collaborations…
Ohhhhhh… Hell Yeah!!! It’s the first annual SoCal Suds Beer Fest in Redondo Beach!!!! It’s already a miracle that something of this bitchin’ a caliber is taking place here (in my hometown), but for the Whispering Pines to be performing live during the unlimited fills from some 50 breweries… that’s just friggin’ too much. Unreal! Aug 21, Aviation Park, Redondo Beach, session two, 5-8pm: Whispering Pines at SoCal Suds Beer Fest. And oh yes, the fills will be unlimited. See you later Lagunitas, Mendocino, Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, and friends…
“What happens when you mix the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Band, craft beer, the wind passing messages along prickly branches of trees throughout the generations, and Redondo Beach? You get Whispering Pines performing at SoCal Suds Beer Fest…Whispering Pines seems to be cut from the same cloth as that breed of enigmatic musical characters that is the tough guy-teddy bear, drunkard-romantic, outlaw-sheriff…there’ll be slide guitar to get your head reeling while the harmonica gets your head shaking, while the sweet nectar of the beer Gods gets your head spinning (ER, by Dirty Jeff).”
Well, well, well…DHR sneaks into the paper. Dirty Hippie Radio Presents Tune In Tuesdays at Patrick Molloys (Hermosa Beach CA), and it’s music to the public’s ears.
“In conjunction with local music promoter…Dirty Hippie Radio is presenting free live music every Tuesday night at Patrick Molloys in Hermosa Beach…Generate extra exposure for excellent independent bands and musicians…Last week’s event featured the garage-surf-psych-(punk) sounds of The Cigarette Bums, the Cobalt Cranes, and the Allah Las…Some of these bands are accustomed to no pay, or worse yet: paying to play!…at Patrick Molloys, the starving artist’s belly is consoled by the warmth of tacos, cleansed by the effervescent percolation of cold beer, nerves quelled by a paycheck. (ER DirtyHippieRadio.com Presents…)”
With one of the best band names we’ve ever seen, these bums rock! It’s a very raw, bluesy, punk, garage rock n’ roll, expanded with a psych layer washed over with saxophone. Maybe a cross between The Stooges and Mighty Baby?
You ever see a group and think, “Man, these guys are totally punk”, even though you know they are not “Punk” music? Well that’s just because the general population is confused about what Punk is – just try to tell me the Velvet Underground isn’t punk and I’ll come find you and shove White Light/White Heat down your throat. It’s melodic punk. At any rate, the Cobalt Cranes are rocking the Los Angeles underground scene, and they are pretty punk about it; melodic punk and rock, with a tinge of psychedelia and an ever so slight occasional inkling of garage surf. Some of their songs shred through your head with a depth and thickness suggestive of a serious air, but with a high tempo identifiable with rock n roll and fun. Other songs, while still dirty and almost grungey, evoke a dark beauty reminiscent of bitter-sweet love, like their (soon to be) hit ‘Take You’. Look for their new EP, In Media Rez early this year!
The Cobalt Cranes are kind of a mysterious band. While all members are amiable persons, and I’ve had the pleasure of interacting with them all, Tim (guitar) and Kate (bass) represent the more serious and enigmatic face of the band, often showing up close to show time, or just after, and then disappearing like your last sip of Colt 45 when you thought you had two left; and sometimes before you could get around to thanking them for blowing your mind and rocking your face off. Meanwhile, Donovan (drums) and Mateo (guitar) are often left lingering behind to make sure all the beer in the joint has been thoroughly finished. Altogether though, the Cranes exude a dynamic chemistry on stage. There’s something about this band and their music that embodies he city, the art gallery scene, and the rich world of the underground venue – which includes the underground mainstream. We at Dirty Hippie Radio always look forward to the next Cobalt Cranes show that we can catch, and we anxiously await the release of In Media Rez!
If you happen to live in one of the other billions of places outside of LA and won’t have a chance to catch the Cobalt Cranes anytime soon, lucky for you they’ve recorded a video, and their live performance at KXLU was videotaped. To further pursue this up and coming band, check out their myspace and tune in to Dirty Hippie Radio for music samples, sales, and show dates.
Pretty girls swarm the dance floor, none can refrain from slithering and shaking to the gooves issuing from the amps. Their music is catchy, but raw. Their attitude is fun, but musically serious. Their vibe is happy, but not fluffy. Their following is stoked, and sexy. A feel good time for all. The Allah Las.
TheAllah Lasare keeping it dirty and surfy. Dirty Hippie Radio appreciates their honesty and obvious ability to have a good time. Amidst their undulating psychedelic garage-surf-rock sound, an enlightened ear can detect whispers and echoes of Easter Everywhere. One of these driftwood days when the Volkswagen busses meet, DHR and theAllah Laswill go surfing. Until then, thanks for keeping us groovin’ with a rawness that can only be matched by nature’s most voracious carnivores.

Kid Infinity is a high energy, fun-spirited, L.A. based type of electro-hip hop, dance-house, punk party outfit…Ryan Pardeiro on mic and vocals, Nathan Huber on electronic equipment, and crowd-hyping, one-man-dance-troupe/lights man Erik Anaya…Most recently they acted as presiding directors over the astounding project: Kid Infinity – The 3D Experience!
PLLX3 was on the verge of unveiling their effects with Michael Jackson’s last tour as the launch pad. They’d even built a large LED screen at the Staples Center for MJ’s show; but, of course, he passed away…Huber pitched the idea of Kid Infinity taking on/testing out the 3D technology…With a virtual stage on the wall behind the band, animation danced as visual effects hovered above our heads, and the added effect of multi-colored glow sticks wizzing through the air…It looked like Atari had hired Q*bert to lace the audience’s 3D goggles with LSD; that Tetris had developed a mind of its own…
It was a total success story…Kid Infinity exited The Smell to a throng of cheering and applauding fans…Remember, when you witness an explosion of 3D live visual productions from the likes of Air, The Flaming Lips, and Daft Punk: K.I. did it first.
The HeardFest will take place August 14 at Junction Block/L.A. Historic State Park. The collective members of Heard of Elephants, teamed with REMAP, bring us this exciting festival to showcase art, comedy, craft, food, and some of the most exciting progressive bands the L.A. underground has to offer. Of course Fartbarf will be there. (Might want to wear B.A. tank tops and flojos with your ape masks for this one boys, it’s probably gonna be a scorcher.)

This has never been done before in the history of live music, ever! Kid Infinity presents: Kid Infinity, The 3D Experience.
All I’m going to say is that Ryan Pardeiro and Nathan Huberwere (Kid Infinity) are up to something very, very heavy. According to hearsay I received from someone from Cobalt Cranes, who heard it from K.I. themselves, this 3D concept and technology was going to be used in Michael Jackson’s last tour; but he departed of course before it could see fruition, and it has not yet been presented in the entire history of live music. And it’s coming to us from a hot and talented L.A. (underground) band – Kid Infinity – for 5 friggin’ dollars at The Smell, Saturday night July 24 (free 3D goggles upon entry.
I’ll let Sean Carnage lay down the heavier details (excellent article). Congratulations K.I. – great, great luck Saturday night; and if I can’t get in from the event selling out I’m going to be super pissed and ultra bummed.
