My Sourgrass Curse
I was totally geared and stoked to go see Sourgrass last night at The Viper Room in Hollyweird… So of course I woke up with a gnarley sore throat: I have a Sourgrass curse. They’re like one of the sickest bands you can catch live and I always seem to get there right when the show is ending (I got one damn song last night). Fortunately, they will be performing in town again on April 3rd, at Cafe Boogaloo for [...]
The White Buffalo Sings
I think that what must have happened is that Richie Havens and Eddie Vedder bumped into each other on some meditative astral plane, where they agreed to conceive a voice that they would then instill in Jake Smith – The White Buffalo.
At least, I’m almost certain that’s gotta be what musta happened, after having finally caught The White Buffalo live, at The Stronghold, in Venice, CA. (Enough cannot be said of the venue and it’s superb sound quality, but I won’t [...]
These Blank Tapes Don’t Hiss, They Rock!
I finally got to catch The Blank Tapes live, last week at Spaceland. I was anxious about this one because I’m not only a fan, but was also lucky enough to be rocking to their killer new album Home Away From Home on the way out to the gig (which hasn’t even made official circulation yet). While getting cozy with other bands before the show, the members of tomorrows tulips assured me that a Blank Tapes set is always fantastic no [...]
Alma Desnuda Reaches Our Naked Souls
Wow, it was a fantastic long weekend for music! I almost wish I could’ve been in many places at once, and yet I am glad I was not; for Saturday night’s line up at Saint Rocke, Hermosa Beach, turned me on to a wonderful group of guys by the name Alma Desnuda: translating from Spanish to Naked Soul. This uplifting San Francisco based band transcended our hardened, worn exteriors, reminding us in the audience that throughout this complicated life we [...]
Killin’ It With The Iguanamen In Guayaquil
Yes, I am an asshole – last night I was on stage playing harmonica with the remaining Iguanamen de Galapagos, Hector Napolitano and Gringo Jeff, to a crowd of hundreds at the Diva Nicotina in Guayaquil, Ecuador! Hey, it happens. Wait, no it doesn’t! What the hell, how did I get so lucky? I was in a kush spot in front of a speaker and essentially behind the band (like a backstage groupie), when Napo was alerted of my presence; [...]
You Want the Allah Las to Play at Your Birthday Party
Beautiful women swarm the dance floor, and no one can refrain from moving to the grooving that’s issuing from the amps. Yes, you want the Allah Las to play at your birthday party; a feel good groovy time guaranteed for all. Saturday night at The Two Headed Horse, in Echo Park, was my first Allah Las show, and most definitely the beginning of many to come for this music fan. Their music is catchy, but raw. Their attitude is fun, [...]
Fartbarf Show Review
To offer a fair review, I’ll begin by confessing that Saturday night’s Fartbarf performance kicked off as a train wreck. Their unity was scattered, as though they weren’t all playing together toward the same goal, and as is common, their monkey masks proved hindering to elements of the live production, i.e., blocking vocals, knocking microphones down, blocking vision, and barring the smooth passage of cool beer down the throat. It also didn’t help this predominately electronic group that about two [...]
