i gave both derek and luke guitar lessons for many years, and they were among my favorite students and people. i just found out about this today, and i’m absolutely devastated. i will miss derek a lot, and have great memories of our lessons, and knowing the philbert family. all the best derek, and i know you’re in a great place. with much love, joe.

Derek did hilarious stunts when he was active in youth group. I believe my grey hairs started with him… How profoundly sad that I am hearing this wonderful music when he is no longer with us and I’m wandering through all the posts on his mom’s FB. >sigh<

This is a beautiful tribute. Unable to think about anything else since I heard, I’ve been playing his music all day & remembering how funny and special he was. I knew he was talented, but I never actually realized how much. Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone….

Thank you for playing Derek’s music today. It helps my grief and shock. I met Derek when he was a little boy; I was his pastor. I remember him as a budding musician – learning to play the sax. When he was 13, he played drums in our Sunday evening service “SoulNet.” I remember him beaming when he nailed this Caribbean sounding drum line in one of the arrangements. He was a talented young man. We will miss him.
