Kirk Joseph’s Back Yard Groove (w/ Dr. John) is on DHR!
Did you know that Kirk Joseph’s innovative “Sousafunk” project, the Kirk Joseph’s Backyard Groove “Sousafunk Ave” LP is proudly presented in our mix at DHR?
For those unaware, Kirk Joseph, son of trombonist Waldren “Frog” Joseph, is a master sousaphone player (that’s the one that looks like a tuba), one of the founding members of the legendary New Orleans-born Dirty Dozen Brass Band, band leader of Kirk Joseph’s Backyard Groove and the 504 Brass Band, and a pioneer of Sousafunk. [...]
Beacon of the Midnight Lamp
Midnight Lamp plays Cafe Boogaloo this Friday, as well as Sunday at Saint Rocke.
“In 2002 we were playing a ton of Hendrix songs… but we weren’t a Hendrix cover band, and didn’t want to be labeled one either… though, there was a relation, so we took the name Midnight Lamp from [the Jimi Hendrix song] ‘Burning of the Midnight Lamp’. As time would reflect, our musical message would be shaped by the purpose of what a Midnight Lamp is: [...]
They’re Walking Among Us, Imposters.
Evan Hein, Nickolai Preiss, and Miles Gretsky of The Imposters
Maybe they’re among us. Imposters. Walking among us even here in the South Bay – studying us, helping us, or plotting our demise. Perhaps your co-worker, choked by a “tie,” restricted by “underwear,” adhering to “9-5,” is actually gathering information for an intelligent planet revolving around a warm star in a distant galaxy. Or possibly some desperate bacteria hitched a ride on the back of a meteor that struck Earth, [...]
Life After Temporal Love, Where Do We Go From Here?
Temporal Love continues to demonstrate that they’re one of the thickest, nastiest, most energetic storms to explode onto the rock and roll spectrum. While anchored in paying homage to the blues, acknowledging jazz, and toying with funk, they blast forth a power-trio force scarcely reckoned with in the world of music today. Intense jams, fat chops, juicy bottoms, extended wanderings, improvisational bliss… and class. Wicked class, raw integrity, and pure joy.
Their 2 shows at Cafe Boogaloo and Lighthouse [...]
New International Farmers single for Reggae lovers on DHR!
As a sneaky, seductive prelude to the much anticipated follow up album to their debut full-length “Closer Than Close”, progressive reggae rockers the International Farmers have let loose a new single upon the masses. Too many of us have been felled under the sword of this ruthless monarch… “King Of Defeat“, from Southern California’s International Farmers.
Catch them live in Hermosa Beach at Cafe Boogaloo – Mar 24, Apr 26, May 28 9PM.
Too Drunk To Rock N Roll
Man, Dirty Hippie Radio did not make it to The Reflectacles Saturday night – what a bummer. Sorry guys, but that’s what starting with a Dogfish Head Burton Baton Oak Aged Imperial IPA, followed by a Full Sail Session Black, a Stone Sublimely Self Righteous, 2 Russian River Blind Pigs, a pint of Port Lost Abbey Gift of The Magi, and a finale of 2 more Burton Baton double IPAs will do to you. I couldn’t find my car, let [...]
Boogaloo Autism Benefit Show
Cafe Boogaloo, Hermosa Beach, is hosting an Autism Benefit Show tomorrow, Saturday, 4:30-7:30pm. Sourgrass and Fortunate Youth will be supporting from the stage. It’s a community event about spreading Autism awareness, promoting youth organizations, alternative medicine, and healthy living; and raking in some dough for a good cause. Dirty Hippie Radio will be there to make the dance floor look good while the bands help spread awareness (with psychotropic music?). See you there, unless you’re too busy making deviled eggs [...]
Midnight Lamp in Boogtown Tomorrow
Midnight Lamp is performing in Cafe Boogaloo tomorrow evening at 6:30pm. Be there to help show Boogaloo why it’s still worth booking good shows in their joint. Don’t let the yuppies and robots complete the full transformation to Club Sharkaloo.
“The Midnight Lamp shine forth with a message of love, life, hope, and get up and dance. Comprised of a diverse group of characters hailing from varied musical backgrounds, the Lamp offer a colorful spectrum of sound that is hard to [...]
My Sourgrass Curse
I was totally geared and stoked to go see Sourgrass last night at The Viper Room in Hollyweird… So of course I woke up with a gnarley sore throat: I have a Sourgrass curse. They’re like one of the sickest bands you can catch live and I always seem to get there right when the show is ending (I got one damn song last night). Fortunately, they will be performing in town again on April 3rd, at Cafe Boogaloo for [...]
Where Has Midnight Lamp Been Hiding?
We haven’t heard anything from the Midnight Lamp in awhile, which makes us sad, but it just popped up on our radar that they’re performing a random show at 6pm, Wednesday evening at Sangria, for St. Patty’s. This is a heavy hitting band that has performed at BB King’s, Saint Rocke, Brixton, and Cafe Boogaloo; and they don’t come around too often. They boast an eclectic stage presence which brings forth a diverse musical force, full of funk, soul, power [...]
