DHR Song of the Day 1/11/11: Al Lay – “Change”
The number 11 is a special character, full of auspicious and mysterious omen. So for today’s 11th day of the 11th year of the new millennium that we’re still desperately trying to figure out (like every other day and year of every other millennia), we’ve chosen Al Lay’s “Change” as song of the day – because goodness and progress often requires a momentous degree of change and rearrange.
DHR Song of the Day 1/2/11: Faking David – “Evolve”
A song from our Canadian brothers to the north, befitting the transition into a new year with growth and change: “Evolve” by Faking David. An evocation of freedom, freedom of expression, freedom to expand.
DHR On 88.9FM KXLU Los Angeles – Playlist Archives: 12/2/10
Another excellent Thursday show with DJ Jen of KXLU. Spun lots of new music and some fantastic older stuff, including an Indian-influenced set with a classic cover of “Light My Fire” by Ananda Shankar (none other than Ravi Shankar’s nephew). Here’s what we played…

The Byrds – “bells of rhymney”
The Cyrkle – “please don’t ever leave me”
The Arbors – “so nice”

DHR Beer Pairing Series, vol. 3: Bootlegger’s and Halloween Swim Team
I’m choosing Bootlegger’s Pumpkin Ale as today’s beer of the day. Granted it’s a bit late in the season for a pumpkin ale (they did release it kind of late and there’s still a little bit around if you know where to look) I wanted to recognize Bootlegger’s job well done – it’s a good pumpkin ale! A number of breweries make pumpkin ales now, but not many stand out; Buffalo Bill’s used to be stellar when it was still [...]
DHR Song of the Day 12/29/10: Jerel Dutton – “Fight Back”
How ’bout some reggae rhythm with Jerel Dutton’s “fight back” for today’s song of the day - in honor of Jerel giving it the good fight after recently suffering, enduring, and surviving an extremely deadly car accident, coma and all.
Cheers to you Jerel, and welcome back to the living! We’ll look forward to more music as your strength continues to build.
DHR Song of the Day 12/27/10: Torches In Trees – “New Life/Bloody Hands”
I absolutely love this cut by Torches in Trees; actually, it’s two tracks that play together on their “New Blood New Sight” album: here’s “New Life-Bloody Hands“.
This band is awesome, and this cut demonstrates how so. It’s full of unexpected transitions, tempo and mood changes, sheer jamming, rocking goodness, and a dash of psychedelics.
I’m never let down by this band and always left wanting more. Would love to see this Echo Park, CA based band hook up for a show [...]
DHR Beer Pairing Series vol. 1: Full Sail Wreck The Halls & Dirdy Birdy
My choice for Beer of the Day is Full Sail’s “Wreck The Halls” 2010. It’s one part American IPA (Is there any other kind? Okay, Mikkeller, you’re doin’ pretty good…) and one part winter warmer. In my opinion, all parts delicious. It’s not over the top, quite palatable – though not a chick beer, but it would probably sex up the ladies very well.
I recommend listening to some Dirdy Birdy with this fine Oregonian ale. I’m really enjoying “Oh My [...]
DHR Song of the Day 12/6/7: Spam Allstars – “Charanga E-350″
Today’s song of the day by Spam Allstars with their super groovin’ upbeat jam “Charanga E-350“. With its jazz, cuban, and funk origins, this number is perfect for good times, sunny days, and long stretches of highway behind the wheel.
Fans of reggae and world music will probably like this too. And if you’re diggin’ the Allstars, you might want to also look into Sci Fi, and Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band.
(Anti-war Christmas) Song of the Day 12/4/10: Hangdog Expression – “If I Had A Reindeer”
Decided to choose a Christmas song as today’s song of the day. How bout the (anit)war song “If I Had A Reindeer” by the Southern California based folk outfit Hangdog Expression…
A very touching, kinda heavy, wistful, smart song; but not your snowy white standard.
